The core formula
Profit starts after every direct cost.
Cash profit equals collected revenue minus direct job costs. Projected profit uses the quote instead. Margin divides each profit figure by the matching revenue figure.
Cash profit
collected revenue − direct costs
Projected profit
quoted revenue − direct costs
Profit margin
profit ÷ matching revenue × 100
Contractor profit calculator questions
What is job profit?
Job profit is job revenue minus the direct costs required to complete that job. JobMargin includes owner labour, helper labour, materials, travel, payment fees, subcontractors, rentals, permits, disposal, and other job-specific costs.
Should I include my own labour as a contractor?
Yes. Assigning a cost to owner labour separates compensation for doing the work from profit earned by the business. Otherwise the same leftover cash can look like both wages and profit.
What is the difference between cash and projected profit?
Cash profit uses the amount collected so far. Projected profit uses the full quote. Comparing both shows whether a weak cash result comes from pricing, payment timing, or both.
